Trollhättan is located on the river Göta älv, of the Trollhättan Falls fame with a 54,000 population. It is a city surrounded by water, with a beautiful canal.
Trollhättan is close to Vänern, Sweden's largest lake, and the Halle-Hunneberg Ecopark. The river Göta runs through the city. It is a key centre for the Swedish film industry, it is also home to a number of high-tech companies. Today the city has two operational hydropower stations. The hydropower has helped the city in its industrial revolution.
Location and connectivity
Public transportation in Trollhättan is well developed and consists of buses, trains and flights. Västtrafik AB is responsible for public transportation services. It takes about 35 minutes by train between Trollhättan and Gothenburg. It has good connections to both Gothenburg direction and to Oslo/Karlstad direction.
The harbor of Trollhättan is located within one of western Sweden’s largest industrial areas. In 1998, a new large freight terminal was built next to the harbor. It offers transport- and logistics solutions for different companies in the region, where rail, truck, air and container freights are all parts of the transportation chain.
It is only a 10 minute drive from the center of Trollhättan to the domestic airport, Trollhättan-Vänersborg Airport, and it takes less than an hour to travel to Bromma Airport.
Trollhättan formerly housed the headquarters and main production plant of Saab Automobile and now houses the headquarters and a production plant of National Electric Vehicle Sweden.
It also has a number of industrial facilities, headed by GKN Aerospace (previously known as Volvo Aero) and its contractual suppliers. As with parallel locations elsewhere in Europe, much of its production has moved from heavy industry to professional services and the creation of intellectual property. As of 2011, Trollhättan hosts a film production complex known as Trollywood; over half of Sweden's full-length films are made with Trollhättan as their base.
Education: Schools, preschools, universities
The municipality has multiple preschools, many of which strive to offer a programme with a specific focus, and organize their pupils by age or into sibling groups. There is a preschool with Finnish-speaking staff for those guardians who so wish to send their children. This activity is offered at Vällingklockan preschool, located in the Central area.
Childcare hours are adapted to parents’ needs and night time childcare is offered. The municipality’s preschools collaborate with comprehensive schools as well. Comprehensive school comprises preschool class and nine-year compulsory schooling
Adult education in Trollhättan comes in three different forms: municipal adult education, special education for adults and Swedish for immigrants. All adult education must be based on the students’ needs and capacities
The University West provides courses and programmes in English, with 11,000 students and about 600 employees. The campus is centrally located in Trollhättan and is built based on students' needs, which emphasizes education collaborating with work-life and applied research. The municipality also offers different types of adult education and Swedish for immigrants (sfi).
Leisure & Culture
Trollhättan has many sport clubs, such as IFK Trollhättan, FC Trollhättan, Skoftebyns IF, and Gripen Trollhättan BK. It has beautiful parks and green areas, and the river Göta runs right through the city. It is a city close to nature, all kinds of water activities and sports are possible to do here.
