The battery ecosystem in the Gothenburg region
Battery plants
Novo Energy Gigafactory: A joint venture between Volvo Cars and Northvolt in establishing a battery gigafactory in Torslanda, Gothenburg. This will mean more than 3,000 new jobs. This facility will have a 50 GWh capacity, enough to produce batteries for about 500,000 cars annually.
Volvo Group Battery Plant: The Volvo Group is constructing a battery production plant in Mariestad, West Sweden, with an estimated production volume of 60 GWh per year. This plant is also expected to generate more than 3,000 new jobs.
In total, over 7,000 people will be needed to work in battery production in West Sweden.
R&D Centres
Both Novo Energy and the Volvo Group are setting up research and development centres in Gothenburg, further strengthening the region's innovation capabilities.
Testbed facilities
RISE (Research Institutes of Sweden) manages innovation projects with partners within the mobility sector and offers facilities and testing for batteries, hybrid systems, fuel cells and hydrogen applications.
Research and study opportunities
Chalmers University of Technology is at the forefront of battery research and offers relevant Master's courses and PhD positions.
RISE also has extensive interests in the automotive battery industry and conducts extensive research and development across the entire battery value chain.
Together RISE and Chalmers University of Technology operate the SEEL Swedish Electric Transport Laboratory.
Gothenburg Technical College. Opening in January 2025, the Battery Centre Gothenburg (from Gothenburg Technical College) is a unique training facility where both industrial staff and students can get real experience in battery technology within a simulated industrial environment.
